Even Martellus Bennett, who played for the New England Patriots, questioned the intent of the letter since Goodell managed to successfully stand for nothing in his response. The issue screamed for clarity and solutions, yet Goodell did what he has done time and time again from his perch: he managed to disappoint people on both sides of the issue.
Goodell and the owners finally came to an agreement despite Jerry Jones’ veiled threats and his holding-up Goodell’s contract talks. I admit to supporting Jones because Goodell only clumsily attempted to protect the NFL shield. In my view Goodell’s leadership is as artificial as the Patriots’ success in the league has been.
